What is Delaware and Hudson Railway mean?

The Delaware and Hudson Railway (D&H) (reporting mark DH) is a railroad that operated independently in the Northeastern United States. In 1991, after more than 150 years as an independent railroad, the D&H was purchased by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP). CP operated the D&H under its subsidiary Soo Line Corporation, which also operates Soo Line Railroad. In 2015, Norfolk Southern bought a large portion of the former D&H rail lines from CP.

D&H's name originates from the 1823 New York state corporation charter listing "The President, Managers, and Company of the Delaware & Hudson Canal Co." authorizing an establishment of "water communication" between the Delaware River and the Hudson River.

Nicknamed "The Bridge Line to New England and Canada," D&H connected New York with Montreal, Quebec, and New England. D&H has also been known as "North America's oldest continually-operated transportation company." In April 2021, the D&H turned 198 years old.

On September 19, 2015, the Norfolk Southern Railway completed the acquisition of the D&H South Lines from CP for $217 million. The D&H South Lines combined are 282 miles (454 kilometers) long and connect Schenectady, New York, to Sunbury, Pennsylvania. The D&H South Line consisted of three rail lines: the Sunbury Line (Sunbury, PA to Binghamton, NY), the Freight Line (Binghamton to Schenectady, NY), and the former Albany Mainline (Delanson, NY to Voorheesville, NY), which is currently leased to SMS Rail Lines. The Nicholson Cutoff is located on the Sunbury Line, between Binghamton, NY and Scranton, PA, and was part of the former mainline of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad between Hoboken, NJ and Buffalo, NY.
