The school is named after Jonathan Dayton, a signer of the United States Constitution. The school is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Elementary and Secondary Schools.
As of the 2019–20 school year, the school had an enrollment of 616 students and 47.2 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 13.1:1. There were 61 students (9.9% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 27 (4.4% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.
