What is Massachusetts Maritime Academy mean?

Massachusetts Maritime Academy (Maritime (inside Massachusetts), Mass Maritime, MMA, Mass (when differentiating between the other Maritime Academies)) is a public college in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, focused on maritime-related fields. With Mass Maritime being located in Buzzards Bay (a Census-Designated Place of Bourne, Massachusetts) it therefore makes Mass Maritime the only four year college and only one of two colleges (the other being Cape Cod Community College (Four C’s) in West Barnstable) on Cape Cod. Established in 1891, Mass Maritime is the second oldest state maritime academy in the United States. Originally established to graduate deck and engineering officers for the U.S. Merchant Marine, the academy has since expanded its curriculum. Though not required, some graduates go on to serve in active and reserve components of the U.S. Armed Forces. The academy operates a training ship, the USTS Kennedy.
