What is National Gypsum Company mean?
National Gypsum Company is a company based in Charlotte, North Carolina, that produces drywall gypsum boards in the US. It has 17 gypsum board plants in the US and presents itself as a fully integrated building products manufacturer. It is a private company, incorporated as New NGC, Inc. in 1993. It is one of the six producers which hold approximately 81% ofthe worldwide wallboard market (Georgia Pacific, Knauf,Continental Building Products, National Gypsum, Saint-Gobain, and Yoshino Gypsum Co., Ltd)
Subsidiary National Gypsum (Canada) Ltd. operates the largest open-pit gypsum mine in the world in Milford Station Nova Scotia. This mine produces approximately 7260 tons of gypsum daily (during full production it is capable of producing over 14520 tons per day), most of which is moved by rail approximately 30 miles to a ship loading facility at Wright's Cove, on the Dartmouth side of Halifax Harbour.
National Gypsum (Canada) Ltd. strips overburden to access gypsum product, and has the means to crush the product to load onto rail cars. Product is transported by rail from Milford Station Nova Scotia.
Canadian National Railways (CNR) transports product to Burnside Nova Scotia to be unloaded, stockpiled, then loaded on to Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) Ships. National Gypsum (Canada) Ltd. has the ability to load 4000 tonnes per hour onto CSL ships.
From May to September National Gypsum (Canada) Ltd. produces 7260 short tonnes per day, in the fall (October to December) 14520 short tonnes per day (Up to 2 people). January to March unloading product slows down due to weather restraints the coldest day in Nova Scotia during January of 2019 was -25.1 degrees Celsius, at the rate CNR travels on the tracks 67 KM/H, the product is flash frozen with a wind chill of -43.78 degrees Celsius. Which takes much effort to unload (up to 5 people). Normal unloading of product is in the temperature range roughly of 5 to 28 degree Celsius.
The company was founded in 1925 by Melvin H. Baker, Joseph F. Haggerty, and Clarence E. Williams.
