What is Union Institute mean?
Union Institute & University (UI&U) founded in 1964, is an American private nonprofit university headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, with academic centers in Hollywood, Florida, and in California (Los Angeles and Sacramento). An adult-focused and diverse non-profit university, it offers online and low residency academic degree programs and certificates to a student body of 1,000, with a faculty of around 300. Dr. Karen Schuster Webb, appointed in 2018, is its current president.
More than 21,000 alumni hold bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees from the school, which is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The university’s mission is to educate highly motivated adults who seek academic programs to engage, enlighten, and empower them to pursue professional goals and a lifetime of learning, service, and social responsibility.
To further emphasize UI&U’s focus on social justice, President Webb established The Institute for Social Justice at Union Institute & University https://www.tisj.myunion.edu) in 2021, with a mission to apply theory to practice through scholar-practitioners, philanthropists, policymakers, and other leaders who are committed to promoting social justice and equity in the United States and globally through research, education, and policy.

In 2021, UI&U enrollment figures show approximately 1,000 students enrolled at all levels, including six majors at the bachelor’s degree level; 12 majors at the master’s degree level; and six majors at the doctoral level. In addition, UI&U offers professional studies and certificates in 10 areas. Tuition (summer 2021) ranges from $350 to $545 per credit hour (bachelor’s programs); from $600 to $810 per credit hour (master’s programs); and from $648 to $1,154 per credit hour (doctoral programs). As of June 2021, tuition for its professional studies and certificates program ranged from $350 to $748 per credit hour.
UI&U offers the following degree programs:
Bachelor’s level: -- Bachelor of Science (BS) in Business Management; Child & Adolescent Development; Criminal Justice Management; Emergency Services Management; Maternal Child Health: Human Lactation; and Social Work. -- Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Psychology.
Master’s level: -- Master of Arts (MA) in Education; Applied Nutrition & Dietetics; Clinical Mental Health Counseling,; Health & Wellness; and Human Lactation Studies.-- Masters of Business Administration (MBA) in Health Care Leadership; Criminal Justice Management; Cybersecurity; and Design Your Own MBA.-- Master of Science (MS) in Health Care Leadership; and Organizational Leadership.
Doctoral degrees: -- Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership, Pre-K-12; and Higher Education;-- Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies in Educational Studies; Ethical & Creative Leadership; Humanities & Culture; and Public Policy & Social Change, Specialization in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Studies.
Professional Studies & Certificates:-- Master of Arts, Graduate Certificate, in Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counseling; Creativity Studies; Health & Wellness; Health Education; History & Culture; Leadership in Public Service; Literature & Writing; and Social Justice.-- Certificate programs: California Teacher Permit; and Cannabis Studies.
LocationsUI&U houses its national headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio. After being located for nearly three decades in an historic building on East McMillan Street in the city’s Walnut Hills neighborhood, UI&U leaders finalized a sale of that property to the University of Cincinnati in May 2021. As of June 2021, The school will move its headquarters to a nearby leased facility on Florence Avenue in Walnut Hills.UI&U also operates academic centers in leased facilities in Hollywood, Florida; Los Angeles, California; and Sacramento, California, with seven smaller satellite branches throughout California.
Because UI&U’s programs are predominantly online, students from across the U.S. and abroad can study from wherever they live and work. Brief residencies are offered for the Ph.D. and Ed.D. programs, meeting face-to-face twice annually.
