The Council of International Schools (CIS) is a membership organization aimed at international education. It is the main membership organization for international schools worldwide.
CIS was formed in 1949. It has over 1,360 institutional members consisting of over 740 schools and 610 colleges/universities, located in 122 countries. Membership is considered prestigious by schools. Many leading international schools in countries around the world are members. The services of CIS include international educational accreditation. CIS accreditation is considered important for expat schoolchildren and safeguarding of schoolchildren. The CIS headquarters are in Leiden, The Netherlands.
There has also been a European Council of International Schools, established in 1965, now the Educational Collaborative for International Schools (ECIS).
