2,5-Dimethoxy-4-methylamphetamine (DOM; known on the street as STP, standing for "Serenity, Tranquility and Peace") is a psychedelic and a substituted amphetamine. It was first synthesized by Alexander Shulgin, and later reported in his book PiHKAL: A Chemical Love Story. DOM is classified as a Schedule I substance in the United States, and is similarly controlled in other parts of the world. Internationally, it is a Schedule I drug under the Convention on Psychotropic Substances. It is generally taken orally.
The belief the name "STP" actually comes from the motor oil additive is untrue. STP was a street name given to DOM by hippies in the 60s when "underground chemist" Owsley made a few batches of the drug and handed them out at shows, only to stop, upon realising that the drug was not popular among new users, due to the greater length and intensity of the 'high' it produced, compared with that evoked by his beloved LSD.
