Answer: What is International Graduate School of Neuroscience mean?

The International Graduate School of Neuroscience or IGSN is responsible for the education of postgraduate students to the level of PhD degree in Neuroscience, at the Ruhr University Bochum in Germany.

Established in 2001, the IGSN rapidly became one of the foremost European schools for postgraduate neuroscience training and has already enabled over 60 young neuroscientists to their PhD degrees. Currently, ca. 50 students are registered within the IGSN degree programme.

One of the unique features of the IGSN curriculum is its intensive lecture programme that covers neuroscience topics through the levels of molecular, cellular, systems, cognitive, clinical and computational neurosciences thus enabling students to gain a very comprehensive knowledge of the field.

Graduate students conduct their research work in any of the six participating Faculties and Institutions (Medicine, Psychology, Biology and Biotechnology, Engineering, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Institute for Cognitive Sciences, Institute for Computational Neuroscience.Monthly international symposia, focussed colloquia, methods training, practical skills training as well as courses in complementary (soft) skills enable a well-rounded education of the PhD students.

Admission to the PhD programme is possible without a master's degree- in this case students should have competed an undergraduate degree programme that spans 8 semesters. Those students that completed a bachelor's degree in 6 semesters may enter the "qualification"- a fast track, intensive training programme that qualifies them within one year to enter the 36 month PhD programme of the IGSN.

The doctoral programme begins every year on October 1. In special cases admissions before or after the formal start-date are permissible. Applications to the programme are submitted online via the [www.rub.de/igsn IGSN] website in the period of October through January 31 yearly.

Dean of Studies and Director of the IGSN is Professor Denise Manahan-Vaughan. Speaker is Professor Jörg Epplen, Vice-Speaker is Professor Michael Hollmann. The coordinator of the IGSN is Ursula Heiler, MA.

The IGSN is part of the Research Department of Neuroscience of the Ruhr University. The IGSN is also a member of NENS.
