Jijiga (Somali: Jigjiga, Amharic: ጅጅጋ) is the capital city of Somali Region, Ethiopia. It became the capital of the Somali Region in 1995 after it was moved from Gode. Located in the Fafan Zone with 60 km (37 mi) west of the border with Somalia, the city has an elevation of 1,934 metres above sea level.
The place is mentioned as one of the halting-places (mahalla) for the caravan route between Zeila and Harar. Until the Second Italo-Ethiopian War, Jijiga served as headquarters for the Ethiopian army and was the battleground for Darawiish king Diiriye Guure and its emir Hassan's iconic attack in March 1900. During the WW2 East African Campaign the Italian garrison abandoned the city and Jijiga was occupied by the British.
