Singapore Telecommunications Limited (commonly known as Singtel) is a Singaporean multinational telecommunications conglomerate headquartered at the Comcare Tower in Orchard, Singapore. One of the four major telcos operating in the country, the company is the largest mobile network operator in Singapore with 4.1 million subscribers and through its subsidiaries, has a combined mobile subscriber base of 640 million customers throughout the Asia-Pacific at the end of financial year 2017.
Formerly known as Singapore Telecommunications Equipment until 1995, Singtel provides ISP, IPTV (Singtel TV) and mobile phone networks and fixed line telephony services. The company has expanded aggressively outside its home market and owns shares in many operators of other countries, including full ownership of Australia's second largest telco Optus, 40% of Bharti Airtel, the second largest carrier in India, 35% of Indonesia's Telkomsel, and 23% of Thailand's Advanced Info Service.
Singtel controls significant market share in various countries in the Asia-Pacific, including Australia, Indonesia, and Thailand, as well as 82% of the fixed-line market, 47% of the mobile market and 43% of the broadband market in its home country of Singapore. Singtel is also the second-largest company after DBS by market capitalisation listed on the Singapore Exchange and is majority owned by Temasek Holdings, the investment arm of the Government of Singapore. Singtel is an active investor in innovation companies through its Innov8 subsidiary, founded in 2011 with approximately S$350 million start up capital.
