School social work is a specialized area within the broad profession of social work. The School Social Work Association of America defines school social workers as "trained mental health professionals who can assist with mental health concerns, behavioral concerns, positive behavioral support, academic, and classroom support, consultation with teachers, parents, and administrators as well as provide individual and group counseling/therapy." School social workers utilize evidence-based assessments and interventions to support children and adolescents who come from diverse backgrounds, have learning and behavioral difficulties, mental disorders, and other health or social issues to improve their overall well-being, remove barriers, and promote academic success. They also work with crisis intervention, group treatment, child neglect and abuse identification and reporting, integrating services to culturally and economically diverse populations, and working on education policy issues.
