The University of Groningen (abbreviated as UG; Dutch: Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, abbreviated as RUG) is a large public research university in the city of Groningen in the Netherlands. Founded in 1614, the university is one of the most traditional and prestigious in the Netherlands.

The institution has been consistently placed among the top 100 universities worldwide, according to leading ranking tables. In the 2020 version of the ARTU (Aggregate Ranking of Top Universities), which is based on data from THE, QS, and ARWU, the University of Groningen appears as third in the Netherlands, 25th in Europe (including the UK), and 77th in the world.
