When activated by an electromagnetic interrogation pulse from a nearby RFID reader device, the tag transmits digital data, usually an inventory identification number, to the reader. RFID is one method of automatic identification and data capture (AIDC).

It is used in many sectors for security reasons, such as shopping centers, 5-star hotels, toll plazas, military camps, medical care, manufacturing, inventory management, shipping, retail sales and domestic or home use.
