DIG: Deputy Inspector General

The full form of DIG is Deputy Inspector General. In India, DIG is a designation of an IPS officer which is senior rank than Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) or Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP). The officer holding this post works under the Inspector General of Police (IG) or Joint Commissioner of Police. There is no limit to the number of DIGs a state can have and most states have multiple DIGs.  DIG-ranked officers wear Gorget patches on their collars which have a dark blue background and a white line stitched on it.

How to become a DIG
  • The candidate who wants to become a DIG has to first appear in the Civil Services Examination conducted by UPSC.
  • After qualifying the exam, the candidate becomes an IPS officer and undergoes specified training as an IPS officer.
  • When an IPS officer completes the training, he is appointed as an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) or an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).
  • Later, on the basis of experience, track record and performance, he is promoted to the post of Superintendent of Police (SP).
  • And then promoted to the post of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and then to the post of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG).
Eligibility Criteria
  1. Nationality of the candidate:- Candidate should fulfill any one of the following criteria
    • Candidate should be citizen of India.
    • Candidate should be citizen of Nepal.
    • Candidate should be citizen of Bhutan.
    • Candidate must be a Tibetan refugee who came to India with the intention of permanently settling in India.
    • Candidate must be of Indian origin who is permanently settled in India They came to India from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of settling in India.
  2. Educational Qualification:- Candidate appearing for UPSC Civil Services Examination must fulfill the following educational qualifications
    • Candidate must have a valid Bachelor’s degree from any recognized universities.
    • A candidate who has completed a technical bachelor’s degree recognized by the Government of India is also eligible to appear in the UPSC exam.
    • Candidates who have passed the final semester examination of MBBS but are currently in their internship can appear for UPSC exam.

DIG Salary in India

As per the IPS Salary Rules 2016 issued by the Government Gazette, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) draw their salary on the basis of super time scale of pay scale. The pay level is 13A. The pay band is INR 37400 – 67000 and the pay grade is 8090. Pay scales are often assessed by the central government.
